The star at the heart of our solar system has released three X-class solar flares (the most powerful class of flares) and their associated waves of charged particles in the past 24 hours. Luckily for us, they have been pointed away from Earth, as seen in the upper left of the video above from NASA.

NASA’s SDO and SOHO satellites captured the explosive magnetic arcs and bursts of plasma in stunning form in the video, which is full-screen worthy. By viewing the sun through different wavelength filters (the colored angstrom filters you see above) we can zoom in on activity happening at different temperatures and involving different ionized elements from hydrogen to iron.

This happens as the sun ramps up for its predicted 11-year solar maximum later in 2013. Wear your sun(plasma)block!

Don’t you wish there was sound in space so you could hear these things? Sigh.

indeed, i do wish i could hear these.

but then again, there’s also something to the idea of getting creative and imagining what something like this MUST sound like. i like the soundtrack to the video. fitting.

It’s difficult for me to not feel like I have multiple personalities. Perhaps people have infinite personalities, but one default. Or perhaps their personalities all get sifted through the same spout or lens, and so it appears to be one though they are many.

I especially notice this tension within my own music. There are times when I want to be a singer songwriter, captivating a room with nothing but my humble words and guitar picking. Other times, I want to stand out, to be more aggressive, to catch people off guard with glitchy beats and strange synth sounds.

While The Lovely Few continue to venture further into outer space, this week I will have a chance to come back down to earth, at least a bit. I’ll be playing two solo performances with my friend Steven Fiore. Steven is releasing a new record and playing a few shows between Charleston, SC, and Nashville, TN. I’ll be opening for him this Tuesday at Red Door in West Columbia, SC, and Wednesday night at Coffee Underground in Greenville, SC.

Please come hang out with us! I’ll be playing guitar with some minimal beats I’ve made using Figure on my phone. I’m excited about doing something new. Steven is always amazing. He really is. If you live in South Carolina and haven’t seen him, you really need to. If you have seen him, you know you need to see him again.

Hubble and the Horsehead, Then and Now

To celebrate the 23rd anniversary of the Hubble Space Telescope’s launch next week, astronomers released a new image (top) of the iconic Horsehead Nebula. It is stunning.

The clouds of stellar gas almost jump right out of my screen! It’s a far cry from the view of the nebula that we’re used to, in the bottom image. Phil Plait has a great description of what you’re seeing at Bad Astronomy:

Just off the top of the Hubble picture is the bright star system Sigma Orionis, composed of five incredibly luminous stars. Combined, they shine with the power of over 75,000 Suns! They are responsible for heating and exciting the gas behind the Horsehead.

The Horsehead itself is the site of ongoing star formation. The dense gas and dust inside the nebula is collapsing to form stars, and, at the same time, the edges are being eroded away by the fierce ultraviolet light of Sigma Orionis. The top of the Horsehead is acting a bit like a shield, protecting the material beneath it, which is why it’s taken on that umbrella-like shape. You can see more sculpted pillars of material around the sides, too, like sandbars in a stream.

Well done, Hubble team. Keep up the good work. You’ve inspired millions.
