What are the 5 songs public radio can’t stop playing? Download 5 songs from the likes of Yeasayer and folk up-and-comers Shovels and Rope, courtesy of KCEP-Power 88, Iowa Public Radio, KHSU, WUMB, and WTMD.
remember when this guy was in Tinker’s Punishment? The Films? yeah, i just put that together.
this weekend with Dan of @rundanrunband. Maybe we’ll have a soundbite for you.
At 7:30 next Monday, July 9, Alan and I will be performing 4 acoustic versions of songs for Balcony TV at Morgan Creek Grill on Isle of Palms. Balcony TV is a website dedicated to promoting music through live performances in cool places around the world with cool views… so, exactly what it sounds like… and a lot like Blogoteque, let’s be honest.
We’re excited for the opportunity. I know Taylor played bass with Ruth Collins up in Nashville. I think we were working on Limited Abilities at the time when he had to step out one night to play this thing.
I checked out the Charleston page, and my favorite act by far was HEYROCCO. Check them out if you haven’t yet.
Playing these outdoor/acoustic deals is a bit of a welcome challenge. It forces me not to rely too heavily upon technology but to see it for what it is: a tool. I’m looking forward to working with Alan on creating some unique arrangements.
Stay tuned for details. Plus, if you’re in the area, feel free to come hang out. Let us know if you have any questions.

Last night was interesting. We played with Steven Fiore and his band at The Hippodrome in Charleston, SC. It was a most notable experience…
This Saturday in Charleston, SC. With Steven Fiore at The Hippodrome (former IMAX theater). Tickets are $10, $7 for students. Doors at 8:30.
Final picture post re: Orionids recording.
This is Dan of Run Dan Run, and the lead of our label, Hearts and Plugs. He tracked everything in his house, and played some bass and keys (bass monosynth) to boot! Dan and I have worked together in various contexts since meeting in 2007 or so. We have given each other advice, encouragement, constructive criticism, promoted, booked for one another… and so it just seemed right that when Dan asked me to join Hearts and Plugs earlier this year, I said yes. We were already working together so much that it made sense to make things official and more professional.
Dan has earned attention with his last record Normal. I was fortunate enough to record a LITTLE section on Lovesick Animal with a group of women from my church. In return, Dan has recorded this EP for us, totally above and beyond. It’s great working with such supportive and creative folks.
It’s also nice working with someone who doesn’t approach music the same way I do. While we enjoyed tracking with Kenny McWilliams (who did The Perseids and will mix and master The Orionids), tracking with Dan was one more excuse to approach this Meteor Series from a new perspective. We want to be ever more collaborative and push ourselves to consider new appraoches, learning as much as we can along the way.
Stay tuned to Hearts and Plugs for details regarding the release of this EP this April.
More photos from the 2 day recording-stravaganza of our forthcoming EP The Orioinids. We will play one new song this Monday night at our show with Tucson’s Seashell Radio at New Brookland Tavern. Be there around 8 since it’s a school-night.
The Orionids comes out this April on Hearts and Plugs records. It will be free on our bandcamp page. And yes, still more photos to come.
Recording life. HUGE thanks to Megan Elger and Dan McCurry for making my stay in Charleston so pleasant while we work on these songs.
Recording, spring 2012 with Dan McCurry. More to come. Now for initial mixing.
After work on Friday I’ll be heading down to beautiful Charleston, SC, to record some new material with Hearts and Plugs’ own Dan McCurry. He’s got a sweet apartment setup, some good gear, a good ear and an open mind. These recordings should go towards the second installment in the Meteor Series, of which The Perseids is the first.
Monday night I met with David Sease to run through some programming. Tonight Alan and I worked on some parts and song structuring, followed by like 20 minutes of us playing on microKorg and iPad (he’s using some sick Moog app).
Stay tuned this weekend for developments. We’ll be Tweeting and blogging as we go, documenting as much as we can. We also have some new dates to add.
If you haven’t seen the video yet, please check it out. We are releasing The Perseids on Hearts and Plugs on April 10, and we’re planning something special to celebrate this milestone.
Thanks, as always, for reading all the stuff we have to say, and listening to our music. Please tell your friends.
-Mike
The independent label Hearts & Plugs, based out of Charleston, SC, is home to Run Dan Run, Mr. Jenkins, and Ash Hopkins. We are honored to join the lineup.
If you haven’t listened to those guys, go check them out now. You can find H&P on Twitter and Facebook as well.
We are so excited about this development. We’ll post soon on the process of joining the label and its immediate consequences.
Until then, please come celebrate with us this Friday night, January 27, at the Midnight Rooster in Hartsville, SC, when we play with Ben Walker. Show starts at 8.
