It’s difficult for me to not feel like I have multiple personalities.  Perhaps people have infinite personalities, but one default.  Or perhaps their personalities all get sifted through the same spout or lens, and so it appears to be one though they are many.

I especially notice this tension within my own music.  There are times when I want to be a singer songwriter, captivating a room with nothing but my humble words and guitar picking.  Other times, I want to stand out, to be more aggressive, to catch people off guard with glitchy beats and strange synth sounds.

While The Lovely Few continue to venture further into outer space, this week I will have a chance to come back down to earth, at least a bit.  I’ll be playing two solo performances with my friend Steven Fiore.  Steven is releasing a new record and playing a few shows between Charleston, SC, and Nashville, TN.  I’ll be opening for him this Tuesday at Red Door in West Columbia, SC, and Wednesday night at Coffee Underground in Greenville, SC.

Please come hang out with us!  I’ll be playing guitar with some minimal beats I’ve made using Figure on my phone.  I’m excited about doing something new.  Steven is always amazing.  He really is.  If you live in South Carolina and haven’t seen him, you really need to.  If you have seen him, you know you need to see him again.

Join us.  This Tuesday and Wednesday.  Stay tuned to The Lovely Few’s Twitter handle for more, and be sure to check in with Steven on Twitter and Bandcamp (where you can get his music) as well.

Mike Mewborne has been caught in some transporter accident.  See half of the result this week as he plays solo shows with Steven Freaking Fiore.

You should come to our show this Saturday because…

We’re playing with Mr. Jenkins.

Nick is one of the best drummers in Charleston, nay, SC.  I met him when he was playing with Run Dan Run.  I soon found out that he is quite the talented individual.  Artist, multi-instrumentalist… the guy does it all.  (You’ll see some of his drawings later this year in a collaborative project.)

His music is heavy on lo-fi sounds.  I’ve always liked his ear for beauty.  It’s like the samples he uses redeem the sounds themselves.  His melodies are catchy, his voice soothing, his instrumentation creative.  And when Dan contacted me about joining Hearts and Plugs a little over a year ago, one of the most exciting parts of the deal was being able to be professionally associated with Mr. Jenkins.

Nick has spent time in New York for the last few years, but has returned to SC.  He is incredibly prolific, so when you visit his bandcamp, you may be overwhelmed   I encourage you to wade through the songs.  Find some that you love.  The music is affordable, or free in some cases, so download away.

Not only is Nick opening the show, he’ll also be joining The Lovely Few with keys and drums during our set.  It will make for a very special performance.  You won’t want to miss it.

See you Saturday!

You should come to our show this Saturday because…

We’ll have new merch!

The Half and Half, the group that made our packaging for Long Division back in the early days of the group, has made another beautiful work for us.  This poster, made especially for the show this Saturday at Tapp’s with Hearts and Plugs label mate Mr. Jenkins, is simply gorgeous.  And at 18x24, they’re big.

We will also have new stickers.  The first true “The Lovely Few” stickers we’ve done, actually.  Design by Megan Elger of Apartment A, who did the art for The Orionids.

We’ll also have special Hearts and Plugs prints on sale… but more on that later.

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE!!!

If you head over to Scene SC, like, RIGHT NOW, you can register to win a free poster, stickers, AND two tickets to the show.  You can’t beat that with a bat.

Hurry, though, winner announced TOMORROW (Wed., March 20)!

HUGE thanks to Scene SC, The Half and Half, and Hearts and Plugs for their work on this stuff.

See you Saturday!

You should come to our show this Saturday because…

We’ll be doing unique arrangements!

Whether you’ve come to all of our shows, or have only just now heard of us, Saturday night offers you a unique experience.  In what has become a bit of a trend this year, we’re trying to do a few things differently in our live shows. We’re trying to rely less on the programs and move more towards a full band feeling.  This has been tough but really good for me as an artist, which is really the whole point of this Meteor Series: Moving away from my comfort zone towards something bigger and better than I’ve been doing.

Last week we did a special acoustic version of our song Cassiopeia for Fork and Spoon’s Casual Fridays recording series.  You can hear the original version HERE.  And be sure to check out the original video HERE.

Saturday night’s arrangement will feature a backing band, including Dan McCurry (Run Dan Run, ELIM BOLT, Western Romantic) on keys and Nick Jenkins (Mr. Jenkins, Asphalt Orchestra) on drums/additional bleeps and bloops.  Alan and Kate will be there, as well.  Nick and Dan will be joining us on several songs that evening at Tapp’s Art Center.

See you this Saturday!

March 23, 8PM doors, 9PM music, $5 at Tapp’s.

Went in to see the fine folks at Papa Jazz today.  Put up one of a very limited number of posters by The Half and Half.  There’s a few others around town.  [Note, they’re mostly in 5 points for now, but will be in (only) a COUPLE other locations by weeks end.]  You can pick up your own at the show on March 23.

In the meantime, you should head down to Papa Jazz.  Not only can you check out the poster IRL, but you can also pick up hard copies of our meteor series albums The Perseids and The Orionids.  Plus, plenty of other great artists like ELIM BOLT (H&P), Dear Blanca, The Restoration, Can’t Kids, Those Lavender Whales… you name it.  If they don’t have it, they’ll get it for you.

See you March 23, Columbia!

This time I spelled Brookland right!!!!

Our label mates The Brave Baby will be releasing their new record Saturday night at NBT.  Supported by ANOTHER Hearts & Plugs act, ELIM BOLT.  PLUS our good, dear, sweet, wonderful, awesome friends in Rejectioneers will be playing.  And if you haven’t seen Foley, well that’s just silly.

Columbia, I really, really hope to see you there.

(They aren’t really called the brave baby.  That’s what makes it funny.)

BalconyTV Charleston July 9 2012

At 7:30 next Monday, July 9, Alan and I will be performing 4 acoustic versions of songs for Balcony TV at Morgan Creek Grill on Isle of Palms.  Balcony TV is a website dedicated to promoting music through live performances in cool places around the world with cool views… so, exactly what it sounds like… and a lot like Blogoteque, let’s be honest.

We’re excited for the opportunity.  I know Taylor played bass with Ruth Collins up in Nashville.  I think we were working on Limited Abilities at the time when he had to step out one night to play this thing.

I checked out the Charleston page, and my favorite act by far was HEYROCCO.  Check them out if you haven’t yet.

Playing these outdoor/acoustic deals is a bit of a welcome challenge.  It forces me not to rely too heavily upon technology but to see it for what it is: a tool.  I’m looking forward to working with Alan on creating some unique arrangements.

Stay tuned for details.  Plus, if you’re in the area, feel free to come hang out.  Let us know if you have any questions.

Show w/Boxwood this Wednesday night.

Several weeks ago I was trying to set up some shows, when Tom from Conundrum asked me about playing a show in mid June.  He said he had a guy playing and he thought our sounds would work well together.  I said that it sounded great, and I didn’t think anything of it again.

Until last week.  That’s when Shuffle Magazine posted our show on their to-do list for the upcoming week.  Oh yeah, I did agree to play that show.  Oh yeah, it is mid June already.  Oh yeah, we do need to practice.

At any rate, the other act we’ll be sharing the evening with is, what appears to be, a solo act from Hollywood, FL, by the name of Boxwood.  Loops galore.  It’s got an element of Panda Bear to it.  I really dig it.  And if you want to witness musical innovation, good use of gear, and approchable droning noise pop, then I think you should come out this Wednesday night.

We’ll be playing likely ALL the songs from Orionids, our latest and free-est EP.  We also have some awesome t-shirts for sale.  Conundrum will have soda, a really great beer selection, wine, crisps… all you could want, really.  I’m excited about it.  And it’s only $5.

Until then, I literally must get my act together.

WSBF Live Session video

A couple months ago, Alan and I went up to Clemson to play some songs on the radio.  That set was broadcast live, on the radio and campus tv.  Now, you can watch the whole thing.

I’m interested to hear which ones you like most.  Let us know.

Big thanks to Jordan and Chris (they’re in a band we like, too) and the rest of the crew at WSBF and CTV.
